The Nigerian Immigration Service, zonal headquarters, zone A Ikeja, under the leadership of ACG Osisanya Olakunle Gabriel, on Tuesday honoured some officers of the zone who is serving, had served the NIS meritoriously in various capacities and retired.

In a colourful event at the zonal headquarters, the serving, retired and retiring officers were given awards and enjoined to make the most of their retirement by ensuring that they remain relevant.

DCI Anatogu love Uche stated that the day was approved by the zonal coordinator, ACG Osisanya Olakunle to honour and recognize hard working officers who were outstanding in their service delivery in the year 2022 as well as to celebrate the meritorious officers, who retired or were retiring between 1st of June 2022 and January, 2023.
“To the awardees and retiring officers, I say congratulations and good luck in all your endeavours. Once again, on behalf of the Assistant Comptroller General and zonal coordinator, ACG Olakunle Gabriel and officers and men of the zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, I welcome you all to this momentous event,” she stated.

ACG Osisanya while Presenting the Comptroller-General’s award to one of the awardees, Osisanya stated that the presentation was done in Lagos because of the proximity and that the award would motivate other officers to work hard, adding that ” the award is initiated by the CG,  Abuja is far, that’s why we are replicating it here at the zone “when you do your work well, there’s recognition for you”.

In her remark at the event, the zonal commander, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Pesons, Lagos zonal command, Mrs Comfort Agboko admonished the retirees to ensure they remain relevant.
“A boss of mine who retired about two years ago is still very relevant. What does he do? He is a consultant to so many organizations, most of our trainings in NAPTIP, he is the one handling it and we enjoy seeing him around because he has made himself relevant. For those of you who cannot go into academics, get yourself busy with something else so that you will not be tired,” she stated.

Another speaker, DCC Anthony E.  Daudu, representing ACM Peter Kibo of FRSC,  enjoined the retirees of the need to create the future of their retirement and engage their minds in something.
His word, “There’s time for everything under the sun. The book of Ecclesiates chapter 3 makes us to know; a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which was planted, a time to be enlisted and a time to retire, a time to be promoted and now some are being retired. There’s something I want to say, what are you going to do after retirement? Because it is important that you still contribute to society.

He added, “You may be a mentor to those who are coming in it is not good for you to just fold your hands. What will you be doing after retirement? It is important that you think about that or perhaps you should have thought about that before now but it is not too late. It is very important so that you can still be relevant.

“The purpose of a man is to be relevant at every point in time. One of these philosophers said, the way to predict the future is to create it. For those of us you are yet to retire, how do you want to retire? Create it now. I notice that some people retire and they died, of course they did not plan for it, some were asked to go because they did not know that they discovered their real age and they were asked to go and they did not prepare for it.”

“Responding on behalf of his colleagues, ACI Ozoemelam Jason Ikechi, expressed profound gratitude to God for seeing them through to their retirement and the NIS for the opportunity to serve. He also thanked their colleagues and friends for the support in the course of their service.

The event was celebrated by a toast, cutting of cake and taken of group photographs.
