LASTMA’s Emergency Intervention Prevents Tragedy in Ita-Oluwo, Ikorodu Accident
A devastating accident occurred at Powerline by Cele Bus Stop, Ita-Oluwo, Ikorodu, involving two containerized trucks – one loaded and the other empty. Fortunately, LASTMA’s (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) swift intervention prevented a more catastrophic outcome.
According to Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, the accident resulted in the rescue of two individuals trapped in the wreckage, while two others were recovered lifeless. The survivors are currently receiving medical care at the General Hospital, Ikorodu.
LASTMA’s prompt response, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Fire Service, and personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 174 Battalion, was instrumental in the rescue efforts. The agency cordoned off the accident site to safeguard the public and facilitate emergency responders’ operations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the loaded container truck suffered a brake failure while attempting to evade a revenue collector. This triggered a chain of catastrophic events, including collisions with other vehicles and damage to nearby buildings.
The General Manager of LASTMA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and lauded the heroic efforts of the rescue teams. Efforts to clear the accident scene are ongoing, with LASTMA officials working to remove the trucks and restore seamless traffic flow.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety, urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
