The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the brutal mob attack on a group of travelers by a local vigilante group along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State. The victims, who identified themselves as hunters, were intercepted by the vigilantes while traveling in a truck and were found with 19 locally made firearms.

The vigilantes, skeptical of their claim, mistakenly believed them to be kidnappers, leading to the tragic incident.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Spokesperson, has condemned the actions of a vigilante group, stating that they unjustly subjected some individuals to mob justice without proper investigation or due process, leading to devastating consequences.

In immediate response, the Edo State Police Command deployed operatives to the affected community, restoring law and order. So far, fourteen (14) suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while a manhunt has been launched for other perpetrators involved in the mob action.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has directed Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Sadija Abubakar to take over the investigation of the killing of 16 travelers mistaken for kidners in Edo State. DIG Abubakar, who heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), will ensure a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation. The IGP has assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to upholding the law and will not tolerate unlawful killings or extrajudicial actions.

The Inspector-General of Police is calling for calm and urging the public to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. He stressed that anyone found guilty will face the full consequences of the law, ensuring that justice is served.

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated that possessing firearms without a license is a criminal offense under Nigerian law, while also condemning the use of jungle justice. Individuals with unlicensed firearms are advised to surrender them at the nearest police station or begin the licensing process.
