Clears Illegal Bus Stops to Restore Order

In a bold effort to ease traffic congestion and maintain order, the Lagos State Taskforce has recently successfully carried out an enforcement operation in key areas, including Jakande Gate, Ikotun-Isolo Road, Command Road, Omi Ata, and Ekoro Road in Abule Egba. This strategic move aims to restore free-flowing traffic, ensure compliance with Lagos State traffic laws, and bring relief to residents and commuters.

The operation focused on commercial buses (Korope) and tricycles (Keke Marwa) that had illegally converted highways into bus stops, garages, parking lots, and informal markets for local gin (Paraga) and other goods, resulting in severe traffic congestion that impacted both drivers and pedestrians.

CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos Taskforce, led an operation that shed light on the chaos caused by commercial drivers on highways. According to Akerele, these drivers have essentially converted major roads into unauthorized bus stops, garages, and parking lots. What’s more, the roads have also become hotspots for illicit roadside trading, including the sale of Paraga, a local gin and unprocessed liquor.

“These illegal activities have resulted in debilitating traffic gridlocks, posing a significant inconvenience to both drivers and pedestrians,” Akerele noted.

The enforcement exercise was sparked by public complaints received through the Agency’s surveillance and monitoring system, particularly in the Alimosho area, where issues like illegal parking on sidewalks and road blockages were rampant.

The operation’s success has dramatically improved traffic flow, providing much-needed relief to residents and commuters. Notably, roads that were previously congested from 5:30 AM to 4:30 PM are now clear for both vehicles and pedestrians, marking a significant improvement in travel time and overall quality of life.
