TRAGEDY AVERTED: LASTMA’s Quick Response Saves Four Lives on Third Mainland Bridge After Devastating Crash Claims One.
A tragic accident occurred on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge, involving a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC) the collision, which happened earlier today at Ilubirin, inward Sura, resulted in one fatality and left four others affected.
According to Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement on Monday morning.
LASTMA officials, led by General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, swiftly responded to the scene and spearheaded the rescue efforts. Four victims were extricated from the wreckage, with three rescued alive. Unfortunately, one person trapped inside the J5 Ford bus succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the J5 Ford bus experienced brake failure while traveling at high speed, leading to the collision with the Mercedes truck. Emergency response teams, including the Lasema Response Unit, FRSC, Nigerian Police Force, and LASAMBUS, collaborated with LASTMA to manage the situation.
The survivors were promptly transported to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for medical attention. LASTMA’s rescue team efficiently cleared the accident site, removing the vehicles and spilled goods to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended his condolences to the bereaved family and emphasized the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season. He urged drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to avoid excessive speeding and ensure their vehicles are in good working condition.
