…Appeals for patience from passport applicants.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs Caroline Adepoju, on Saturday, ordered an investigation into multiple complaints levelled against some of its officers over “noncompliance with ministerial directives on timeline passport administration.”

 

Adepoju, who expressed deep concerns over complaints of misconduct levelled against the service’s personnel in some passport offices nationwide, disclosed appropriate phone numbers for Nigerians to report any form of misconduct by any personnel for appropriate sanctions.
The service’s Public Relations Officer, Dotun Aridegbe, revealed this in a statement he signed on Saturday titled, ‘Alleged unprofessional conducts at passport offices.’

Aridegbe noted that “the Comptroller General has ordered an investigation into the matter, especially in regards to the noncompliance with Ministerial directives on the timeline of passport administration.”

According to the CGI, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on October 4, announced a new timeline of two weeks for processing and issuance of passport following the complete clearance of passport application backlogs nationwide.

Therefore, she presented additional phone numbers for the public to report misdemeanors by NIS personnel at any of its offices, saying, “We are not only ready to answer your calls but resolve issues.”

Nigeria can make N2.5 trillion from ocean – NIS boss, Adepoju.

Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Caroline Adepoju has said that Nigeria could make N2.5 trillion from the ocean.

 

She said this at a one-day workshop on Blue Economy, organised in Port Harcourt by the Rivers State’s command of NIS.
Adepoju spoke on the theme: “The Coastal of State of Rivers and Benefits of the Blues Economy: Stakeholders Perspective.”

According to her, the ocean holds huge opportunities for developing countries to build more innovative and resilient economies.

“N2.5 trillion can accrue to Nigeria from the Blue Economy,” she said, stressing that “the oceans are 72 per cent of the world covered by bodies of water. The Seabed – 90 per cent of deposit is yet to be explored. 2.2 million species are yet to be discovered by experts.”
“80 per cent of goods and services come into the country through shipping transportation.

“It is very important in the sustainability of the economy of this country in the area of the blue economy and its derivatives.

“Ocean economy offers many opportunities and we must strike the right balance between benefitting from the ocean and protecting its resources. The Global Blue Deal could drive more investment into emerging sustainable sectors that could benefit developing countries.

“There is opportunity not only to preserve Nigeria’s trader strengths but also look afresh at how Nigerian-based actors play their roles in promoting international trade in the maritime industry, oil and gas and allied services,” she stated.

She called on all stakeholders to ensure a high standard of business integrity by “ensuring transparency in transactions, proper documentations, eschewing corrupt practices, avoiding extortion and other sharp practices that may be contrary to economic growth and development.”

Nigeria Customs Service Administers Nationwide Promotion Exams to Enhance Transparency.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, in a bid to promote transparency and career growth, has conducted promotional examinations nationwide for officers and men of the service.

The examination, which started with the rank of Deputy Comptrollers, Assistant Comptrollers, and Chief Superintendent of Customs on October 16, 2023, at Sascon International School in Abuja, as confirmed by the Service spokesman, CSC Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, saw dedicated officers hailing from various Area Commands and Units showcase their intellectual prowess in line with the Standard Operating Procedure established to promote deserving officers based on merit.

The Ag Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, while noting that the exams ensure transparency and fairness in the process, stressed that promotion is not just a welfare program for customs; it’s essential to regenerate the service and ensure that those who are deserving of various positions are elevated.

“We had some pep talks with them to help them believe in the system and understand all the efforts that we have made to ensure that there is a lot of integrity in the process. We want them to know that promotion now is based on performance and not who you know.

“The report I got regarding the level of preparations attests to this fact that we are now reconciling ourselves to that reality; it’s about what you know, how capable you are, and how you can demonstrate the knowledge of the job. So that’s what should come out, and that’s what we count for each of these officers writing the exams,” Adeniyi explained.

Speaking with newsmen, an Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Odedeji Babajide, noted that the promotion would serve as an incentive to spur officers to perform more efficiently.

“Anyone granted the privilege of leadership should definitely know that to whom much is given, much is expected, and that means we should put in more than we have been doing before to make sure that the service is improved. We must ensure that there is value addition,” he stated.

DC Oluremi Omisere, in her remarks, noted that officers who gain promotion must ensure that the key primary role of customs, which is trade facilitation and border security, must be carried out judiciously.

“Officers must ensure that revenue targets set by the government are met, and every leakage in revenue is being controlled,” she stressed.

Speaking on the examination, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu said, “There’s a lot of transparency in it. My expectation is high, and I hope to climb higher. Because to whom much is given, much is expected, this promotion will help me do better.

Deputy Comptroller of Customs Idris Abba-Aji said, “We give others the lead to follow. The examination was conducted with world-class standards. With the trend of development globally and the training we get, we will be able to withstand every challenge”.

Lagos Police Identifies Police Officer Caught On Camera Shooting In Ladipo Market  …Commences orderly room trial.

The Lagos State Police Command has identified the person in a viral video shown shooting an AK47 rifle in Ladipo Market as Inspector Istifanus Kwanchi, serving in a Lagos squadron of the Mobile Police (MOPOL).

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, as confirmed by the Command spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin has ordered the immediate commencement of disciplinary proceedings against the officer for his unprofessional, unethical and dangerous behavior.

“Meanwhile, members of the public are hereby assured that the Command will not tolerate any form of deviant behavior from its officers and men, while those found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with laid down rules”, he said.
