The Global Security-Sector-Reform Foundation (GS-Foundation) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Police Reform and Transformation Office (PORTO) in alignment with the commitment of the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Egbetokun to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly with regards to the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), has officially handed over state-of-the-art equipment designed for a 2,000-bed capacity mobile barracks to the Nigeria Police Force.

MOBILE Barracks equipment worth several millions of naira were donated to the Nigeria Police Force on Friday, 15th September 2023, at the Police College Ikeja. This significant initiative, aimed at enhancing the welfare and deployment capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force.

The equipment which comprises of military-grade tents, equipped field kitchens, modern toilet, washroom facilities, medical clinics and beddings were all handed over to the Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun at the police college playground Ikeja.

The Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Johannes Lehne, on his part said it was a thing of joy to render support to the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that it is their dream to make the Police Force the best in Africa.

He stated, “We are proud to be associated with the Nigeria Police and render any support where necessary. The main essence of this donation is to see a Nigeria Police that is effective and efficient. This collaboration of Germany, the UNDC and the Nigeria Police is s special one because it is a very effective triangle where we aim at sharing our leadership experiences towards uplifting the Nigeria Police Force. we are pledging more support and this we will do.”

The CEO of PORTO, Mr. Tunji Lardner on his own part said “the project started two years ago after the enactment of the 2020 Police Act, noting the essence of the donation was to situate a more effective and efficient Police Force for the country. “PORTO is a special project set up to help the Police and this originated from the Presidency to see to the implementation of Police projects,”.

IGP Egbetokun while receiving the equipment, said the donation came at the right time when the Police Force under his watch was establishing a Special Intervention Squad SIS aimed eradicating crimes across the country.

He stated, “I am very delighted to be back in Lagos this afternoon for this special occasion. This donation of these mobile barracks equipment that we are receiving today couldn’t have come at a better time; this donation is coming at a time that the Force is setting up a Special Intervention Squad with the aim of stamping our violent crime in Nigeria.

“Our Special Intervention Squad is going to comprise at least 40,000 men and we are going to deploy at least one thousand to each of the state of the federation.

“We have started mobilization, we have started selecting our trainers, very soon 25 of them will be sent aboard for training and when they come back, the training proper will start with the 40,000 Special Squad. This equipment that we are receiving today is coming at a time that it is most needed. We are going deploy this equipment during the training of our special squad.

“The equipment will also help in providing the immediate solution to the challenging of accommodations in our training schools. Now, our training schools will have capacity to train more men as we get more of these donations.

“Before I come down here to make this address, I got a commitment from the Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany that more of these and many more donations will be coming to the Nigeria Police Force.

“Everywhere I go, I like to share the present police vision. We have a vision to emplace a professionally competent police force that will be service driven, rule of law compliance and people friendly.

“We want a Police force that will so very positioned to respond adequately and appropriately to the dynamics of crimes in our society. I want to thank our foreign partners for keying into this vision and ready to continue to give us assistance.

“I thank the Federal Republic of Germany represented by UNDC, I thank the PORTO also and all our foreign partners for all the assistance they have been giving to us.

“I want to call for more support even though we are not Oliver Twist, but at every given opportunity, we want your assistance because we cannot do it alone. We call on all organizations to come and support the Police to achieve a better and much more effective police force for Nigeria.”
