The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, launched the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for Schools Protection Squad (SPS) and organized a workshop on the Safe Schools Initiative for Strategic Police Managers today August 9, 2023, at Abuja Continental Hotel, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.
This follows the recent establishment of Schools Protection Squad, a high-profile special unit for the protection of schools and educational institutions across the country.
In a statement signed by the Force Spokesman, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi who noted that the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual is a comprehensive document that provides clear guidelines for the smooth operationalization of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS).
It spells out the organizational framework of the unit, procedures for mobilization, and code of conduct for officers assigned to the unit. It equally provides procedures for collaboration with other security agencies to ensure a coordinated approach in tackling threats to schools and educational institutions.
The IGP enumerated some of the strategies to be employed by the NPF in the achievement of the mandate of the School Protection Squad to include the generation of information and development of intelligence, community policing partnerships, police-public cooperation, inter-agency collaboration, security and administration of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), deployment of logistic assets, humanitarian services, as well as training for school managers/teachers and members of the host communities on their roles in emergency situations.
The Inspector-General of Police, while noting that the initiative will commence with 18 pilot states which are more vulnerable, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), assured that the Police will diligently undertake the responsibility of safeguarding educational institutions against potential harms and threats, and urged all stakeholders to support the Federal Government, the Police, and other partners for the achievement of the initiative

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, directed all Commissioners of Police, CPs and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police AIGs of border States with neighboring countries especially, Niger Republic to work collaboratively with sister agencies at the border to ensure no internal security issues with respect with Niger Republic Coup.

IGP gave this directive at the August meeting of Strategic Police Managers which is a monthly forum for Police strategic communication, which coincides with the 50th day of his appointment as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
According to the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force will continue to monitor the situations at those places, to ensure deployment of adequate personnel for the maintainance of internal security in those areas.
Speaking on the achivement of his administration so far, IGP Egbetokun said security operatives across the country within the period under review have arrested a total number of 986 armed robbery suspects, 377 kidnap suspects including bandits, 848 suspects of homicide, 297 suspects for possession of prohibited firearms, 517 suspects of rape, defilement and other sexual offences, 874 suspected cultists, and 5,281 suspects for various other offences.
He revealed further that a total of 520 firearms of various calibres including AK47 and other assault rifles, 4,043 assorted ammunition, and 264 stolen vehicles were recovered nationwide while a total of 363 kidnap victims were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families and loved ones.
According to the police boss, the force crime-fighting initiatives are paying off, through series of covert and overt operations targeted at smashing criminal gangs terrorizing our communities all over the country, we have successfully dismantled several notorious criminal syndicates involved in organized crimes such as armed banditry, insurgency, armed robbery, kidnapping, gun running, cattle rustling.
His words: “As part of our crime management tactics to address the trending crimes in the country, the Nigeria Police Force under my watch has commenced the process of invigorating the Police Mobile Force (PMF) which remains our statutory striking arm. We have started the process of mobilizing 40,000 strong and willing Police personnel who are expected to be drawn from the existing Police Mobile Force Squadrons, State/Zonal Police Commands and other tactical Units of the Force. It is imperative for the Heads of these Commands and Formations to give maximum cooperation to the Mobilization Team.
“In the period under review, I flagged off the distribution of cheques to cover Insurance benefits to next-of-kins of officers who paid the supreme price and those who have suffered permanent deformities in the course of discharging their lawful duties.
“To foster a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with retired officers, I recently held a meeting with the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON) to understand their needs and concerns. As a result, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Department of Finance and Administration has been designated as the dedicated focal person for the Association.
“This decision ensures that all issues and inquiries raised by police retirees will receive prompt attention and appropriate solutions, affirming our commitment to supporting those who have served our communities diligently throughout their careers. Furthermore, we have instituted a committee led by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning to take up the concerns on the Police Pension Bill and advise on necessary steps towards its ascent by Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief.
“Recognizing the importance of cutting-edge technology in modern law enforcement, we recently relaunched the PoliceVGS Quick Emergency Reporting and Response System (QERRS), a smart policing initiative aimed at revolutionizing police response to emergencies and ensuring swift and efficient action in critical situations.
“The Police-VGS QERRS, an additional option to the already launched C4i-NPF Rescue Me App, is an application that has been modeled to ensure prompt response and referral in the event of emergencies such as accidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, criminal incident reporting, and intelligence sharing amongst others.
In addition, the Digitalized Central Motor Registry which is already operational, has received a boost from all areas of our society. The DCMR application has been a blessing to our collective security in many areas and it will be continually updated to match up with present realities in Nigeria.
“In a bid to enhance community-oriented law enforcement and reinforce public participation and trust in the Nigeria Police Force, we are working assiduously to unveil a series of practical initiatives on community policing and a comprehensive reorganization plan in line with my action plans and vision statement.
“This renewed community policing plan is geared towards building strong partnerships with local communities, and a proactive and collaborative approach to policing that addresses the specific needs and concerns of citizens so as to create a safer and more secure environment for all residents while promoting transparency and accountability within the police force.
The Standard Operating Procedure for one of our frontline initiatives in this regard, the School Protection Squad (SPS) is scheduled for launch tomorrow Wednesday 9th August, 2023, at the Abuja Continental Hotel. I look forward to seeing you all at the event.
“To further entrench discipline in our system, I have ordered a significant restructuring and strengthening of the IGP Monitoring Unit and the X-Squad within the Police Force to ensure greater efficiency, sanity, and accountability. In the same vein, all Commissioners of Police in charge of States are to give effect to my directive on the immediate establishment of Complaints Response Units in all State Commands in line with the provisions of Section 131 (1) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, to complement the efforts of the restructured IGP Monitoring Unit and X-Squad for better service delivery.
While urging Police Managers to drive together with him on the strategies of building more robust rapport with the members of the public, he told them to embark on professional and ethical mentoring of the personnel under their watch, and deliberately looking out for feedbacks on their efforts.
IGP Egbetokun also commended all Commands of the Force for the most professional manner in which they managed the recent protest by the citizens and the organized Labour such that no single casualty was recorded while the protest lasted. “I commend Nigerian citizens and the Labour leaders for also conducting themselves in the most peaceful manner.
“Indeed, the overall conduct of Police officers in the management of the protest should henceforth, be adopted as a template for operational control of protests across the country. In this vein, Commands Commissioners of Police are hereby directed to establish direct liaison and work with Labour Unions and Civil Society Organizations to ensure that Labour related protests, rallies, and similar public activities are peaceful and without incidents”, he said.
He assured them that the welfare of personnel is always on the front burner of his heart and this should be properly communicated to Officers and men regularly. Promotions will be regular and strictly done based on merit and available vacancies, while disciplinary actions will not be viewed lightly against erring personnel.
The IGP also reacted to the recent looting of food warehouses and shops in parts of Adamawa State and to ensure that such attacks do not reoccur in other parts of the country, Command CP’s are directed to henceforth emplace round the clock provision of security at all government warehouses as well as strategic storage facilities and never allow the repeat of the Adamawa incidents.

IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun has emphatically declared that, henceforth the Nigeria Police Force under his watch will not condone deliberate and unprovoked harassment, attacks, and unwarranted killings of Police Officers who have dedicated themselves to securing lives and property of all Nigerians.
IGP Egbetokun said this on 8th August, 2023 at the August meeting of Strategic Police Managers which is a monthly forum for Police strategic communication, that coincides with the 50th day of his appointment as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
The meeting is convened to review the current state of the nation’s internal security, highlight some of NPF achievements, and to enliven policing strategies towards achieving the core symbols of new policing mantra – Service, Integrity and Excellence.
Egbetokun stressed that, every attack or killing of Police personnel henceforth will be met with a commensurate and lawful force as an attack on a public officer in the line of duty is tantamount to an attack on the state. “Enough is Enough.
This strong warning is made clear again so that evil-doers, criminals, and agents of destruction in Nigeria will know that their offences against the State, its agencies, and its people will not go unpunished.
He made it clear in his remarks that we will not leave any stone unturned in our efforts to continually suppress and decimate criminality and heinous activities of non-state actors who cause pains, and sorrows in any part of the country.
He noted that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership will operate under the following ideals which briefly embody my mission and vision statements – to have a professionally competent, service-driven, rule of law compliant, and people-friendly Police Force that will support the agenda of government for economic recovery and growth as well as socio-political development of Nigeria, and to evolve into a Police Force that is well positioned to respond appropriately and adequately to the dynamics of crimes and criminality in our contemporary society.

Nigeria Immigration on Monday appointed Aridegbe Adedotun, a Deputy Comptroller, as spokesman.
He holds a BA Arts degree, Masters in Terrorism and International Security, and a PhD in Crisis Management.
He was one-time spokesman of the Zone A Command, Ikeja, Lagos.“The highly cerebral officer is happily married with kids,” Immigration said.
Police Arrest Suspected Ritualists Who Received N105m Ransom.

Police operatives attached to Zone 2 Command, Onikan have arrested five suspected ritualists who received N105m after abducting their victim’s wife and children.
The suspect was arrested following a petition received by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command Heads. “On the 17th of July, 2023 a petition was received by the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 2 Command Headquarters on criminals who deal on compelling action by way of intimidating, obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, threatening to kill by written words, suspected ritualist, and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace by one Mr. Animashaun Oluwasegun who is the principal suspect, who changed his name to Afeez Uthman by way of documentation.
“Based on the petition, the Assistant Inspector General of Police detailed detectives from Zonal Anti- Piracy Unit who immediately swung into action and got the suspects arrested namely; Alh. Afeez Uthman Imoleayo, Mr. Ramon Temidayo Uthman and Saidi Ajayi.
“Others are; Alhaja Monsurat Salami, Kikelomo and others who are still at large who conspired, abducted the complainant’s wife and children through which the total sum of One Hundred and Five Million Naira (105,000,000.00) was obtained with a written threat to kill the complainant and his family members.
“The principal suspects Alh. Afeez Uthman Imoleayo and his cronies also falsified the complainant’s children birth certificates and also compelled the complainant to relinquish all his properties to him.
“Consequently, when the principal suspect Alh. Afeez Uthman Imoleayo was interrogated, he admitted the allegations against him for obtaining the alleged sum of One Hundred and Five Million Naira (N105,000,000.00).
“He also converted Model 2004 Chevrolet Rain Blazer SUV valued $9,700 USD equivalent to Five Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N5,600,000.00) and abducted the complainant’s wife and three children for twelve years, changed their vital documents such as birth certificates etcetera belonging to the complainant in connivance with his wife Alhaja Kikelomo and one Saidi Ajayi his driver.
“The modus operandi of the suspect is by pretending to be a prayer partner with his victims as he is a strong member of an Islamic society called “Ansarullai Youth at Ikorodu, Lagos State”. He usesspiritual concoction to bath and drink with the pretence that it will pave way for his victims, and also make them to take an oath that they should not disclose to anyone.
“In the interim, investigation is still on-going, suspects will be charged to court of competent jurisdiction, at the end of investigation, please.”

Operatives from Zone 2 Police Command Headquarters, Onikan Lagos, have arrested 10 Police officers for mounting illegal road blocks and causing untold hardship to business activities along the Bagagry/Seme border Expressway.
This was disclosed by the AIG Zone 2, Muhammed Ali, on the activities of security agents, especially the Police, insisting that the multiple check points were impeding trade.
There had been serious complaints by Nigerians, especially drivers plying the route to the AIG Zone 2, Muhammed Ali, on the activities of security agents, especially the Police.
The Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Wale Bashir Adeniyi, who met with his Beninese counterpart recently promised to liase with the Inspector General Police and other heads of security agencies on how to reduce the number of check points along the route.
The Police boss promptly responded by arresting the Police officers in question and decried the untold hardship Nigerians, especially businessmen had been subjected by the dubious Police officers.
“When I assumed office as the AIG here, I was inundated with complaints of the activities of security agents,who mounted illegal checkpoints for the purpose of extortion and I said something must be done to address this.”
“So we set up a team of detectives from the Zonal X-Squad to investigate and report back. I can authoritatively tell you that over 10 Policemen have been arrested and are being detained for necessary disciplinary actions.”
“One funny thing about the people is that most of them are not serving Policemen either at the border or in Badagry.
They just go there, mount road block and start collecting money from travellers and businessmen doing their legitimate businesses.”
“We have a way of dealing with them internally. The exercise of raiding Policemen on illegal duty is going to be sustained because the IGP, Olukayode Egbetokun, has met with the Comptroller General of Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, on how to collaborate and checkmate the menace on that route” he added.
